Pain Medication and Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are on the rapid rise, and this trend is projected to get worse.

Our immune system protects us from various pathogens, and it is a critical defense mechanism in keeping us healthy. When people develop an autoimmune disease, our immune system erroneously finds certain body tissues as pathogen and starts attacking them. For example, rheumatoid arthritis patients experience joint deformity because their immune system keeps attacking joint tissues, causing inflammation and change in joint structure.

While medication, such as steroid, can resolve symptoms by suppressing immune system, this is far from ideal for a long-term management because people are more likely to get sick. Remember, our immune system is the best medicine available.

So why are we seeing such a spike in autoimmune diseases? One of the major reasons is a careless use of anti-inflammatory medications. They destroy gastrointestinal mucous membranes, causing leaky gut and microbiome imbalance. If they sound foreign to you, it is because your doctor has not learned about them either.

There is a hope. I have been able to help patients with autoimmune diseases through nutrition and acupuncture, and recently one of them has completely gone off medication with doctor’s blessing. I’m offering 2 nutrition seminar sessions this month for autoimmune diseases, so please do not miss them. They are on 8/4 (Thu) and 8/20 (Sat).
